Many jobs today are not linked to physical work. Lives
based on a sunup to sundown schedule on the farm or on the endless assembly line have
faded. The western world has become a society of thinkers. The currency of
knowledge and expertise have replaced elbow grease as the means to an economic
end. These seismic shifts would lead one to believe that thinking is now more
important than ever; but that is only partly true.
My Lens
I try to be creative in my work, although I'll admit that
the ideas I "come up with" are often strategies that other
non-health care companies have implemented. It's hard to find examples in my
industry of creative solutions to HR problems. I'm not being critical, just
stating what I see through my lens.
Inherent in my world view is that it is limited to just
that....my view. What I think, work on, and discuss with my team is based on
how I see things around me. My thoughts are based on what is filtered through
my personal lens.
Your Lens
The same thing happens to you. Sure, we try to step
back and see the big picture, but we all have our own built in biases that
cloud our thinking. The impact shapes how we think about the issues going on in
our organizations, and what we think we should do about them.
Plenty of thinking...stemming from our own biases. Hmm.
Lots of Lenses
The opportunity before us is to challenge ourselves as
leaders in a new way. For example, the next time you have a vacancy on your
team are you willing to hire someone from outside your industry?
Having a fresh
perspective that challenges the status quo (read here --> what you've
allowed to be the norm) could transform your team's impact. But, you have to be
willing to make a move of that magnitude.
How About You
Making bold moves that not only challenge ourselves, but
push our whole team to a new level is not for the faint of heart. The risks can
be high...which is also why the rewards are as well. In the end, it's not what we think that is important.
It's what we do that counts.
I'd love to hear from you.
No Excuses.
