Symphony of Destruction

The following rant is brought to you

Time for a moment of self-disclosure: I love all things iPhone, iPad and using e-tools to get my work done. Integrating multiple email accounts and calendars along with note-taking apps to eliminate the almighty pen and paper make me absolutely giddy.

Sad, I know.

Alarm Clocks In Meetings
Although I love my tech toys, you will never, ever, ever hear them in the workplace. Why? Because I'm at work! However, it seems that many (read here -> all of humanity) believes that setting an alarm for every little task, meeting and incoming and outgoing email is somehow respectful.

Really? Are you kidding me?

"If I bring my alarm clock to a meeting and have it go off 15 minutes before my next meeting would that be okay?"

How About You
Are you so excited about your new fangled gadget that you just love the little sounds it makes? Do you also get annoyed when people talk during meetings off to the side because that is disruptive and rude? Really? Time for a reality check folks.

I'd love to hear from you.

No Excuses.

  1. Jay - couldn't agree more. I will add one more to your list - the Blackberry chime EVERY time you receive an email....really!? Is that necessary? The concept of respect is lacking in many workplaces for sure. I blogged about this back in September (business etiquette) and was blown away by the number of emails and comments I received - it obviously struck a nerve with folks...just like this one did with me! Great way to kick off Monday Jay. Have a great week!

    1. Thanks could I forget the chime? (I was a bb guy for a long time.)

      Have a super week!

  2. I agree 100% with you Jay! I'm the person that is mortified if my phone makes a sound in a meeting or in the general working area. The most annoying of them all is the "droid" ring for every text and e-mail. That one drives me insane.

Unfortunately, it is the norm. I have seen managers indulging in this as well. Sad to say, but I don't think we will see this go away anytime soon.

FYI, I love my tech, but I actually turned my phone off for a whole day yesterday. It was the most free I have felt in a while.

    Rant on Jay!

    Best Regards,

    1. Thanks Janine...I think we're going to see this behavior go away soon either, but I felt compelled to blow off some steam about it!

  3. I'll admit to it, I've checked my work email during a meeting. And after the meeting I took pause and self-reflected as to how rude I was for doing so in front of others.

That happened once, hasn't happened since.

On another note, I actually still use a notebook and paper but it can be captured via Evernote so I'm still technically integrated I guess.

    Keep rockin' Jay!

    1. If you've only checked your email once in a meeting you are a far better man than I! I'm finally into Evernote and absolutely love it.

      Have a great week Keith!

    2. Did I say once? I meant once per day! Just kidding...

  4. I really enjoy to read this awesome blog post.
