#HealthcareHR is Alive and Well

I’m fresh off a hectic couple of weeks that included two fantastic #HealthcareHR conferences. You read that right…TWO events focused on human resources professionals in healthcare.

That’s what I’m talking about!

The first event focused on the long term care human resources pros. I was honored to deliver both a keynote address on transforming the talent acquisition function into a high-powered contemporary machine, as well as a session on leveraging social media tools to build both personal and employer brands.

The events were absolutely fantastic, it was well organized, and the attendees were so engaged I had to be kicked out of a room after one of my sessions because they were so many people asking questions!

The second event was the 52nd annual ASHHRA conference that brings together HR professionals from all healthcare disciplines for jam packed three days of learning, networking and fun.

I was so impressed not only with the high tech theme and quality of sessions; but the push to take ASHHRA forward as a leading edge part of the HR space had me fired up!

How About You
For those HealthcareHR leaders out there who haven’t taken advantage of these terrific events in the past, please consider them as “must attend” events in 2017.

You won’t be disappointed, and you will appreciate the experience, the friends old and new, and the energy you will feel to return to your organization and take yourself and your team to a whole new level!

I’d love to hear from you.

No Excuses.

Snark is Not a Leadership Skill

Snark - "Biting, cruel humor or wit, commonly used to attack someone or something."

Snark and Credibility
I'll be honest with you. I love jokes...not only playing them on people, but also being on the receiving end of a good prank. Good ones use a combination of fun, creativity and a clear signal that the balance between humor and cruelty will never crossed.

Quite honestly I think they can show the human side of leadership, particularly if we demonstrate that we don't mind being on the receiving end of a well-intended and harmless prank. I would much rather have the team feel comfortable teasing me vs. them worrying if my teasing has some sort of underlying message (even though it never does.)

Never lose an opportunity to show the "real you" with your team.

Snark and Losing All Respect
The flip side of course is when the fun morphs into simple cruelty. We've all made mistakes and crossed the line, but that's not what I'm talking about.

The decision to brand oneself as the one who always takes things a little too far is for stand-up comedians.

It is never a legitimate strategy for leaders.

Ever.

Candidly the underlying issues that seem to drive these behaviors are typically based on low self-esteem and some sort of inferiority complex.

I've seen it many times in my career. It has nothing to do with how bright or accomplished the aggressor is; in fact many are quite good at their jobs.

Sadly though, they allow their insecurities to shine brightly as they use snark as a weapon.

How About You
Which leadership style have you chosen? Do you look for opportunities to show that you are human along with the rest of your team? Or, is your self-talk machine blaring so loudly you don't realize you are inadvertently hurting those around you?

I'd love to hear from you.

No Excuses.

Bahahahaha

Sometimes work can be...well...funny! I thought I would take a little break from the normal energy I pump out on leadership and laugh a little (at myself) today.

#SHRM15
So, I was fired up to be part of the #shrmchro event and to be a #shrm15blogger. I flew to Las Vegas...stood in line in the hot sun behind 450 others at the airport for a cab...and then waited forever in line again to check in to my hotel.

Except I didn't book the hotel properly ahead of time and had no room!

Podcast
In my previous role I launched a podcast that I absolutely loved hosting. As I prepared for the first show I was a bit nervous. I had all of my questions typed up so I would be ready.

Except I ran through my questions in the first five minutes and had to improvise for the remaining twenty-five minutes!

Time Zones
I now work in a role that has me communicating constantly in multiple time zones. This should not be difficult.

Except I am now the master of the double-booked calendar for no other reason than I apparently can not tell time!

How About You
Have you made any gaffes lately that make you step back and laugh at yourself? Candidly, in the moment these mix ups might not seem very humorous. Looking back now, I think they are a good reminder for me that I'm not that special after all.

I'd love to hear from you.

No Excuses.
